Medan - Day 3

A hearty breakfast later we drove up to Bukit Gundaling that gave us a better and closer view of Mount Merapi. There was a couple of horses being offered as rides.

Horsey

We took a few silly group photos and I even managed to buy a blue poncho from one of the souvenir shops (I think the driver that took us around is amazed that we could buy anything from anywhere. Then again, this is what happens when you have the Shopping Goddess on the trip).

Mount Merapi sightly shrouded by clouds

Back in Brastagi town, the guide dropped us off at a shopping square and needless to say, everyone left with at least a bag in their hand.

An hour of ride later, we arrived at Simarjarunjung, a small tea plantation famous for their local ginger tea and fried banana fritters. Despite just having lunch, we managed to still down a few banana fritters each. Dad and Uncle loved the ginger tea so much that they bought a pack each. Uncle even said that he has been to this exact cafe before and even pointed out to us which table he sat it.

Another hour or so later, traffic started to get heavier and we knew that we are finally back in Medan town. Our last touristy stop for the trip is the King's Palace. The local guide there could speak very good English and I was thoroughly impressed. He told us that the King had unfortunately passed away in a plane crash and now his young son has taken over the throne.

There were about 5 bus loads of school kids that made is near impossible to take any decent pictures without some kid being in it. This was shot when they were still sitting down listening to their teacher.

The King's throne

Ho well, this marks the end of the trip. Good to have re-visited this place and carved new memories with my family. We are already make some plans to go somewhere together again next year. Can't wait!
